Why does the cat covers thier's excreted substances ?

I read somewhere that it's a method to prevent bigger predators from discovering their presence. Obviously, there are almost no predators that our house kitties have to face, but the habit's stuck. Personally I'm glad that they have this habit, because covering up the poop masks the smell.
